a) The average rainfall in London is 23 inches or 50mm per year
b) A litre of water weighs 1 kilogram or 2.2 lbs.
c) The average Victorian terraced or semi detached house has approx 1,000 sq ft of tiled roof.
d) 1 inch of rain falling on a 1,000 sq ft roof produces 600 gallons of water which the gutters have to collect and drain away down the downpipes to the drains
e) Heavy rainfall on blocked guttering can increase the weight of the gutter by as much as ten times!
f) As per the above, water is unbelievably heavy. If you don’t believe it, fill up a 5 litre can from a tap and try walking with it for more than fifty metres.
g) Gutters are usually made of plastic. They hold their shape because of their curved form. If they fill them up with rainwater and then freeze, you have several metres of solid ice hanging over your head.
h) A waterlogged, frozen length of guttering can weigh as much as 50 lbs.
This picture on the left is an example of a blocked and waterlogged gutter our gutter cleaners had to deal with.
